LowEmission at Energy Norway 2024

Stavanger 15-17 April: LowEmission Centre Director Stefania Gardarsdottir participated in a panel debate at Energy Norway 2024. The conference is organized by the research centre NCS2030 - National Centre for Sustainable Subsurface Utilization of the Norwegian Continental Shelf. The conference theme was subsurface opportunities for the future energy mix. Stefania participated in a panel debate on "Pathways and obstacles for achieving a 2030 emission reduction goals", together with Elisabeth Kvalheim (OG21/Equinor) and Kjetil Hjertvik (WintershallDea).

The discussion covered several themes such as the energy trilemma and the competition for clean power. The panel also discussed the serious challenge of the lack of skilled people required to realize the energy transition, ranging from engineers, skilled labor and researchers. The competition for people is and will be tough between sectors, and we should strive to attract more young talents to STEM subjects and, maybe equally important, promote lifelong learning. We are proud to contribute to this much-needed competence and capacity building through LowEmission, even though we are only a small piece of the big picture.

We are proud to present the 2023 Annual Report for LowEmission. Read about our achievements, results and collaborations in reducing emissions from the Norwegian continental shelf. A big thank you to everyone who contributed! In the report you will find a series of stories on our joint efforts to reduce emissions in the oil and gas industry. Read the report here.

TotalEnergies delegation visits LowEmission facilities

LowEmission research scientists had the pleasure of receiving a delegation from Centre partner TotalEnergies on 18 April. Subproject 1 lead Adriana Reyes-Lúa started by giving an overview of our activities.

Spin-off projects were also presented. SINTEF research scientist Marta Bucelli spoke of SafeAm, which aims at improving safety systems’ design and procedures for handling accidental ammonia spills.
Then, the group moved to the H2/NH3 combustion laboratories, where SINTEF Chief Scientist Mario Ditaranto outlined his experiments related to the combustion of ammonia in gas turbines. Next, NTNU professor Magnus Rønning and postdoctoral fellow Mónica Pazos Urrea gave a lab tour of the NH3 cracking facilities at NTNU’s Kjemihall.

Interacting with our partners in such a way always brings about stimulating discussions which often lead to new project ideas. Thank you to our TotalEnergies friends for taking the time to visit our facilities!
